Help with a thesis... [Oct. 2nd, 2009|11:02 pm]
University of Auckland students... and others

flynnacatri
Greetings all; I'm looking for victims volunteers currently studying or working at Auckland uni to answer a survey for me. I'm doing postgrad marine science and am gathering lots of lovely statistics whimper on what people know/think about marine reserves in New Zealand.

I'm comparing faculties to see if there's a difference between Arts and Business etc - so if you answer nothing else, PLEASE tell me your degree area?

The survey is under the cut, so be warned before clicking!

There are 13 questions, not including basic demographic data. Answer as many questions as you wish – if you don’t know the answer, or nothing fits, leave it blank.
If you would answer, i'd be very grateful, i need more data within two weeks (one week is better!). You can answer in a comment - anon, or not, the statistics wil be anonymous. And comments are screened! (will unhide general questions unless requested otherwise)

And if you are interested in the results, let me know. And if you feel like passing this on to more people... :D let's just say I'd be very happy.

Hi

I am a Masters student at the University of Canterbury, working on a thesis on comic book readers, superheroes and masculinities. I’m looking for people who read superhero comics who would be willing to take part in a group interview about what they read, and what they do/don’t enjoy about superhero comics.

I'll be in Auckland this coming weekend, running a group on Sunday afternoon (27th). The exact time is still TBA, but I'm hoping for somewhere around 1-3, somewhere near the city (Ponsonby, New Market etc) - I'm hoping to be able to provide some transport if needed.

I can also arrange another group, or individual interviews if these don't suit.

There will be yummy nibbles provided for anyone who wants to take part (and I can cater to any weird allergies and dietary needs if I know about them in advance).

I would really appreciate it if you could pass on my information to anyone else who you think may be interested in taking part in this focus group.

My website, www.superhero.geek.nz, has more details about my research, including contact details for my supervisors and myself.

Thanks

What public consultation? [Jan. 7th, 2009|07:19 pm]

"Next month, New Zealand is scheduled to implement Section 92 of the Copyright Amendment Act. The controversial act provides 'Guilt Upon Accusation,' which means that if a file-sharer is simply accused of copyright infringement he/she will be punished with summary Internet disconnection. Unlike most laws, this one has no appeal process and no punishment for false accusation, because they were removed after public consultation. The ISPs are up in arms and now artists are taking a stand for fair copyright."

There's a petition here : http://creativefreedom.org.nz/

Nowhere to be found on any news site, all over the web otherwise. Search 'Guilt Upon Accusation'or 'Section 92 of the Copyright Amendment Act.' It's due to come into law on the 28th of Feb.

Amnesty Debate Poster
by =Flynn-the-cat on deviantART

(easier to post this way than to overload your internet)

Next Thursday the 31st of July at 6.30pm, the Auckland University Amnesty club will be hosting a debate on whether NZ has an obligation to uphold the UN Indigenous Right, with the many complications involved for NZ.
Debaters coming include Pita Sharples and Don Brash (on opposing sides, which should be fun).
Feel VERY free to attend, or at least send someone else along in your stead.

E-mail replies from lecturers [Jul. 15th, 2008|07:48 pm]

Hi all -- I'm an American looking into doing my MA at Auckland or Wellington. I sent e-mails inquiring about the program to the heads of the department at both Auckland and Wellington, and a few days later neither of them have yet responded. Is this normal? In the UK and the US, professors write back that day or the next day, so I'm wondering if there is just a different protocol in NZ, or some academic holiday I don't know about. Should I be phoning them to express my interest and ask questions? Thanks for any thoughts or advice!

ETA: He finally responded! And I've applied -- thanks everyone!

Sooo~~
Yet another fire drill/bomb scare/exploded microwave/nuclear incident/false alarm/terrorist attack/assassination attempt went down in Arts/HSB this afternoon around 3:30pm. Everyone was evacuated and four fire trucks came. :D

You can never say summer school isn't just as exciting as regular semesters!

Hi :)

I'm studying abroad at the University of Auckland in the fall semester. I'm really excited about being there. I'd love to make some friends in the area. And if anyone has any thoughts/experiences on these housing places that would be really helpful!

I hope it's appropriate to post here - I thought that some of you might be interested in this. :) I'm a staff member at Auckland Uni who's organising this in her free time.

It's coming up soon!

We've organised this market to benefit The Lonely Miaow who care for stray and feral cats in the Auckland area. (We're unashamed cat people!) There'll be a raffle with pieces donated by vendors and also food and drink. The profits of both will go to the charity.

Expect to see all sorts of interesting, quality, handmade items by some fabulous artisans!

We have the fabulous Peter of www.warpart.co.nz to thank for the poster.

Hi guys, sorry about the somewhat dire title. As the current admin of this community I'd like to welcome all new students to the University Of Auckland. I have a couple of things that may be helpful to some people, maybe even you o-O hehe.

  • If you need a list for this semester's textbooks, Vol 1 Bookstore on Symonds St have them right by the door. (They're also giving away cans of V, Chupachups and pens when you shop there ;) ) Worth a look to compare prices with University Bookstore, anyway.
  • Don't forget to register with the Student Learning Center! It's only $10 a year and they have helpful courses throughout. I had one last week and it really helped and got my confidence up for one of my weaker subjects. Also, if you're learning a language or want to learn a skill they can pair you up with someone who can help/teach you, provided you teach them English/a language/a skill of yours! This programme is called the Language and Skills Exchange programme, more info is here.
  • O-Week is this week, check out some of the bands and stuff they got going in the quad during the day and at Shads at night. There is a full programme here. ^^
  • And finally, something more personal. ;) I'm selling two textbooks, both are prescribed texts for the following classes:
  • Linguist 100: I have a copy of An Introduction To Language (Fromkin) in excellent condition - as new. I bought it for $119 from UBS, make a reasonable offer and I might feel generous ;) It's very useful for explaining things that the lecturer doesn't make into much sense.
  • Sociol 106: Almighty Auckland (Carter et al.) You will need this book for tutorials. You will need this book for the essay. You will need this book for the test, and you will most definitely need this book for the exam. I swear, the course was created for this book, and the markers will love you for quoting it (after all, they wrote it). Bought secondhand for $20, will sell for $12 or near offer. In quite good condition, edges of cover are just a little worn.
If you'd like to buy one or both book/s, please email me at threetequilafloor@gmail.com If no-one has contacted me about the textbooks by March 9th I'll be selling them to UBS.

Sorry for the lots of words! Have a great O'Week!

I'm Courtie, a first year student starting a BA.

It's nice to see you all...and good luck and finances for this semester. <3

Well, that was a ridiculously short and pointless comm post. XD

Hi all!

I'm moving to Auckland next week to study at the University (Postgrad+PhD). Do you know of any cheap squats (not just room/flatmates - real informal communities!) in the city where one can find long-term shelter?

Thanks for the help
